Although the word “inflammation” is generally associated with various discrete disease states, it need not be. Inflammation is a natural part of the body’s response to internal and external stressors. It is necessary for survival and plays key roles in human physiology. Provided that inflammation is contained within healthy ranges, it has limited potential for bodily harm.
Several Iranian researchers recently published results of an experimental study on the ability of Fennel essential oil to promote a healthy inflammatory response to increased acidity within the gut when ingested orally.* They found that Fennel essential oil helped to maintain healthy levels of inflammation on a molecular level.* Most interestingly, it was determined that this effect was perpetuated via modulation of the NF-kB signaling pathway (a key pathway in a number of inflammatory responses).*
While further investigation is merited, these findings are an exciting step in understanding how Fennel essential oil exhibits its gastroprotective effects.*
